Acute methemoglobinemia after endoscopy.

چکیده
Acute methemoglobinemia may be caused by topical anesthetics and other oxidizing medications commonly prescribed by Family Physicians. Without knowledge of this potentially lethal condition, delay in diagnosis and treatment is likely. Methemoglobinemia should be considered in any patient presenting with cyanosis, particularly after the use of oxidizing medications. We describe a case of methemoglobinemia in a patient who presented with cyanosis after endoscopy. This case followed otherwise uncomplicated upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. The diagnosis was delayed several hours because the physicians treating the patient did not consider the possibility of acute methemoglobinemia.

متن کاملSevere methemoglobinemia from topical anesthetic spray: case report, discussion and qualitative systematic review.
Few health care professionals realize that topical anesthetic spray can cause methemoglobinemia. We describe a 56-year-old woman who was transferred to our emergency department when severe cyanosis and chest pain developed after administration of topical oropharyngeal benzocaine and lidocaine during outpatient endoscopy. Investigations revealed a methemoglobin level of 51%. Despite rapid diagno...

This case report describes two pediatric cases of immediate oxygen desaturation from methemoglobinemia and sulfhemoglobinemia after one sip from a plastic water bottle containing hydroxylamine sulfate used by a relative to clean shoes. Supplemental oxygen and two separate doses of methylene blue given to one of the patients had no effect on clinical symptoms or pulse oximetry. The patients were...
